While students were designing Minecraft houses during Innovation class, I decided to try making a larger building structure. I searched tutorials for a modern house and ended up with this link to a "skyscraper/apartment." I followed the steps of the tutorial and 6-story building with lots of glass in less than 2 hours. I made a few changes in the stairwell so that the doors to each level would always open into the larger living area (in the tutorial, the doors alternate sides). I also needed to improvise with the landscaping since the Education Edition does not have the hedges. I created water channel that borders the lower level and goes under a bridge at the entrance. To finish, I will still need to add some interior pieces. Furnishing is an area that I have not practiced, but students have already shared many suggestions. With the success of the modern apartment, I wanted to try a similar building on my own. In the middle of winter, I have the warm beach in Florida on my mind so decided to build the All Seasons Resort. This condo is a spot that I have visited most spring breaks going back 30 years. This build took longer than the tutorial, 1-2 hours a day for 4 days. A fun part of the build was that I did not look at any pictures of the resort until I was finished. I used the scale from the tutorial as my guide for the height of each level. I then started with trial and error for how wide I would want one of the front facing rooms. From there, I built around the pool and up to the tiered decks on the 5th and 6th floors. The U-shaped structure around the pool is unique on the beach and easy to remember a lot of the features. I did not have Minecraft fence that I thought matched well, so I chose the more modern glass. After looking at the resort picture, I could have made the room units even wider. The extra width could help with the interior furnishings. I started to include some beds, kitchen, and a couch in the some of the middle rooms, that have more square units of space. I also took some liberties on the street side, where an elevator and lobby exist. Recently, I have spent most of my Minecraft time in Survival worlds, it was fun to return to the creative play. I also got to explore fill commands to speed up some of the build when there was repetition on each level. I do not have many attempts at modeling real-life building and it was a fun challenge. I may now try to create a couple more of the unique buildings that are close by the All Seasons Resort in Madeira Beach (possible the drawbridge!)
